They were going to be following the story of “Fiela se Kind”, and because it is a historic story, she felt it would be only fitting to spend the last night of their journey at an historic Knysna house (Hope Villa was built in 1901!). The History of Hope Villa And that is where we come into the story!

Dalene Matthee was a South African author best known for her forest novels, written in and around the Knysna forest. Her book titled “Fiela se Kind” which was first published in 1985 tells the story of Fiela Komoetie and a white 3 year old child, Benjamin, whom she finds crying on her doorstep. For nine years Fiela raises Benjamin as one of her own children. But when census takers discover Benjamin, they send him to an illiterate white family of woodcutters who claim Benjamin to be their son. What follows is Benjamin's search for his identity and the fundamental changes affecting the white and coloured families who claimed him. The book was first adapted to film in 1988. A new version of Fiela se Kind – which was partially shot in the Knysna forests – was released in September 2019.

If this story interested you I can highly recommend any of Dalene Matthee’s books which were all originally written in Afrikaans but have been translated into 14 languages. She really brings alive the stories of the Knysna forest and the early woodcutter families. You will not be disappointed! And to go a step further why not head along the Rheenendal Road to the Goudveld forest area and walk the Circles in a Forest Trail. At the Krisjan-se-Nek Picnic Site, the starting point of the trail, you will find the Dalene Matthee Memorial stone.

Since Getaway launched in 1989 it has become a household name and a highly regarded source of all things travel-related in Southern Africa and beyond. Make sure you grab a copy of the February 2021 issue off the shelf right now and read the full story. Should you wish to stay at Hope Villa B&B too, check out our website for the special offer you will get if you book directly with us! Book Direct for a 15% Discount

Hope Villa is situated at The Heads, 6kms from the centre of town but close enough to be able to nip back there if you want to experience more of the town “hustle and bustle”. The surroundings here are peaceful and tranquil. Hope Villa is set on a large property so there is plenty of off-street parking and a lovely garden with swimming pool, trees and the constant sound of birds going about their business! We love birds and you will get to meet our wagtail couple who visit daily for grated cheese, or our cheeky Cape Robins who are as tame as pets (they also love cheese) and numerous ‘witoogies’, mouse birds and weaver birds will keep you entertained during breakfast as they snack on the bananas that we have in a feeder at our front veranda. We are sometimes spoilt with a visit from an owl, Knysna Loeries and more recently a Burchell’s Coucal that has a weak spot for cheese!A short amble down the road and you’re at the sea where the views will take your breath away. The Indian Ocean enters the Knysna lagoon through The Heads (we are on the East Head) and every day down at the lagoon is different. There are many benches and viewpoints where one can just sit and watch the water coming and going (the change of tides is very interesting to watch because the water moves very fast and strong through The Heads), fishermen hoping to catch “the big one”, the pleasure boats having fun on the lagoon or the resident seals having putting on a show in the water.

CHILDREN WELCOME

Your kids will love it here! Plenty of space for them to spread out and have fun. And in summer you will battle to get them out of the swimming pool at the end of the day. Children always sleep well here because their days are filled with sun, sea, sand and fresh air. The added up-side to that is that it gives parents some down-time in the evenings to relax on the front veranda with a bottle of wine.

KICKSTART THE DAY WITH OUR DELICIOUS BREAKFAST

Our breakfasts cater for all appetites and will really set you up for the day! We serve a variety of breakfast cereals, yoghurts, a selection of breads and seasonal fresh fruit salad. We then offer eggs cooked to your liking and served with crispy bacon and other little sides, depending on what we decide on the day! You certainly won’t go hungry here!

AMPLE SECURE OFF-STREET PARKING

We are one of the lucky accommodation establishments at The Heads in that we have ample secure off-street parking under the shade of our trees. That is a real blessing in the summer months when parking down here at The Heads is in high demand!

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Hope Villa is situated in such a perfect part of Knysna that one doesn’t even have to get into the car to go anywhere but can still experience awesome sights and lovely beaches! A couple of metres down the road takes you to a small little beach on the lagoon. It is calm with no waves so ideal for young children. When the tide is high though, the little beach is under water so best to go at low tide! Then if you walk in the other direction from Hope Villa and take one of the roads up the hill, after a beautiful 15 minute walk you will reach the top East Head viewpoint. Wow, this view will take your breath away! You can see right over the lagoon to Lake Brenton, across Leisure Isle to Thesen Island and then through The Heads to the Indian Ocean. In whale season you will more than likely get to see a whale or two moving past in the bay. Every time you go up to this viewpoint the sea and the lagoon will be different, be it high tide, low tide, turquoise blue or dull grey blue. You won’t ever tire of going up there. If you carry on a bit further down the hill to the other side of the top view point and walk down, down, down the road you will reach Coney Glen Beach. This beach is not recommended for swimming as you will see by the generally rough conditions. But there are many little rocky beaches down at Coney Glen and it is a lovely place to spend time amongst the rock pools looking for “sea treasure”! Just keep your eye on the incoming waves! When you are down on the beach have a look up the steep rock face of the East Head and you will see the viewing deck that overlooks the Indian Ocean is way above you! Very impressive. Leisure Isle is another easy 4km walk along George Rex Drive. Steenbok Nature Reserve is on the town-facing side of Leisure Isle. You will find lovely indigenous gardens with benches under the trees throughout the reserve area, easy walking paths and wide open spaces which makes this tranquil side of Leisure Isle a must-do! Walking around to the other side of the island you will be met with a beautiful view towards The Heads. When the tide is low you can walk far out on the sands of the lagoon. Bollard Beach is also a lovely, calm swimming beach with no waves so also ideal for young children.

YOUR HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME COMFORTS

If you want your holiday accommodation to provide that homely feel then Hope Villa is your obvious choice. We are hands-on hosts and are always available to give tips on where to go, what to see and where to eat! We love to share our knowledge of the area with our guests to ensure that they leave Knysna with the promise of returning one day because there was not enough time to fit in all the many activities on offer! Hope Villa is a relaxed bed and breakfast where you can feel free to put your feet up and relax or to stretch out on the couch on the front veranda in the afternoon and have a nap (it’s a fabulous spot for doing just that!). Our comfy beds will ensure you sleep like a baby and because there is no night-time city noise you might even need to set your alarm to wake up in the mornings! We speak English, German and Afrikaans and love meeting new people.

FOR THE SPORTY TYPES

So you like to wake up in the morning and go for a jog? Or play a round of golf? Or maybe you prefer water activities? Another reason for choosing Hope Villa! A good cardio jog to the top of the East Head or a flatter but longer jog to and around Leisure Isle is what many of our guests do to work up a breakfast appetite. We are close to two fantastic golf courses. 2 Kilometres down George Rex Drive you will find Knysna Golf Course or if you want a slightly more difficult course with views that might just distract you from your game, then Pezula is almost on our doorstep too. You choose! One of our favourite things to do in summer is paddle out on our kayak and see what we find! We have had beautiful sightings of seals in the lagoon chasing shoals of fish, seen stingrays as they dart through the lagoon water but even if you don’t get that lucky it is always a treat to hop overboard and have a dip in the crystal clear waters of the lagoon on a summer day. You are welcome to borrow our kayak to explore the lagoon from a different perspective.

RESTAURANTS NEARBY

Hungry? The restaurant options in the vicinity of Hope Villa will keep you from going hungry! Just down the road from us you will find East Head Café. You cannot beat that view!! Food, service and location are absolutely perfect. In summer you should be prepared to wait for a table (no bookings taken). On Leisure Isle you will find Nadine’s Corner and Bodega’s. Both are only open during the day. Good for light meals, cakes, coffees. Nadine’s Corner offers a delicious Sunday roast! Head back down George Rex Drive in the direction of town you will find Blend Country Restaurant – set under the trees and open from late afternoon it is a peaceful place with good food and a play area for kids. It is re-opening this week, under new management so we look forward to going back there after the extended closure during lockdown. Keep going down George Rex and you will come to Bosun’s Pub & Grill. Super bar, separate dining area or you can sit on their balcony to enjoy your meal. Very good food and service. Steaks, ribs and eisbein are recommended!

You can show her the photo of the baby robin that I had to re-unite with its mom after it tumbled from the nest the other day. I think she thought she could fly but didn’t realise that she needed stronger wings before that would happen! Summer will be really jealous that you got to see the Cape Eagle Owl that spent many days in the milkwood trees outside the back this winter. The drongos and the other birds were totally unhappy with her being here but she was not in the least concerned with the constant verbal abuse that the other birds subjected her to! Every evening she opened her big yellow eyes and started preening her feathers in preparation for her flight into the night. It was a privilege to have her with us! The little mouse that is pictured was one I rescued one morning from the pool. Fortunately I got to her just in time and after warming her up in my hands for a while I released her into the garden and she scuttled away. Our aloes have just finished flowering and the clivias are coming into bloom. They always add such vibrancy to the garden and this shows us that your time with us is almost over. Our cats Ratty and Mousey are also excited about the arrival of Summer. She always spoils them so much with her warm rays and longer days! They can’t wait to spend long hours in the garden sunning themselves.

Please send our regards to Europe when you get there. And spread the word that if anyone is looking for warm weather, sunny days and a special home-away-from-home bed and breakfast accommodation experience, Hope Villa B&B is waiting with open arms! We offer affordable bed and breakfast accommodation at Knysna Heads, just a short stroll away from the lagoon and a lovely little beach which is ideal for summer lagoon swims. For the more active traveller we have a kayak that can be used to experience the lagoon from a different perspective. And to end the action-packed day, guests can take a dip in our swimming pool to rinse the saltwater off after a day in the sun and sand!

For those of you familiar with the Heads area you will recall there used to be another restaurant close to East Head Café (previously Senza). This closed at the end of April 2017 and the restaurant went to tender in August but apparently none of the applicants for the tender fitted the criteria so it has to go out to tender again. Unfortunately it seems there will not be a restaurant in that spot until early 2018.

Freshline Fisheries is a very popular seafood/fish restaurant situated just before you cross the lagoon to Thesen Island. It is a relaxed, rustic, outdoor venue with excellent seafood/fish. Most of our guests who go there, go there twice during their stay! They are not licensed so it is necessary to take your own alcohol and no corkage is charged. Only seafood and fish served there and it is highly recommended! #3 on TripAdvisor. Freshline Fisheries

Café Mario is another very popular restaurant in Knysna. Always humming! Booking essential. It is situated at the Waterfront and serves Italian – fantastic pizzas and pastas, calamari but no other fish, salads, steak. #8 on TripAdvisor. Cafe Mario

MUSE Fusion Food is a relatively new find for us although it has been in operation for 3 years. Also amazing pizzas, pastas but serves a lot more variety than that too. Caters for vegan and vegetarians. Very relaxed and buzzy and a completely enjoyable restaurant! Also a live music venue on certain nights. A popular place with the locals which is always a good sign! MUSE Fusion Food

Bosun’s Pub and Grill is another restaurant well-supported by the locals. Great food, great prices, nice pub and a separate dining area although one can book a table in the pub section. Excellent steak, ribs and eisbein! Bosun's Pub & Grill

Another top pizza place is Chatter’s. Try the Rustico! Pizza prices are a bit higher than most but well worth it. It is a family-run restaurant which shows in the service. #9 on TripAdvisor. Chatters Bistro

If you are looking for a vibey, busy evening out try Tapas & Oysters on Thesen Island. Good for oysters, tapas and sushi. Tapas & Oysters

Not too far down George Rex Drive from us you will find Blend Country Pub and Restaurant. Set amongst the trees with indoor and outdoor dining areas. Relaxed and great for kids as there is a play area and lots of space! Live music Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. A wide-ranging menu. Blend Country Restaurant

We like to go to The Bell Tavern in Belvidere for their Sunday roast. It is a quaint pub with indoor (cosy) and outdoor dining areas. A menu ranging from light to more substantial freshly-cooked meals. A lovely relaxed restaurant in beautiful surroundings. I don’t think they take bookings. The Bell Tavern

A bit further away but worth a visit is Enrico Restaurant which is situated right on the beach at Keurboomstrand just on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay. Stunning location, great seafood and fish, pastas and pizzas, meat. Also no bookings accepted. Well worth a visit! Enrico Restaurant

A new restaurant in town which is getting rave reviews and is more fine-dining is Le Maquis. It is run by a couple who previously ran a restaurant in Knysna called Die Gieter. Le Maquis is more expensive but the reviews rave about the food and apparently well worth every cent. French cuisine cooked with passion and love! We haven’t tried this one out but guests and locals who have been there have only good things to say about it! Le Maquis

Hope Villa is an historic house which was built in 1901. The home is built of stone taken from the cliffs behind the house and locally made clay bricks, and features yellowwood floors and windows frames, oregan pine ceilings and doorframes. Hope Villa is situated in the middle of three original plots, which were later consolidated into one erf. It is the only house out of 6 original houses built at the Heads in the early 1900’s that remains standing in its original form today. (It has obviously undergone some lovingly administered internal restoration and updating!)

When I look at the grainy “olden day” photos that we have of Hope Villa, it is hard to imagine what it was like to live at the Heads in the early 1900’s. People looked so old-fashioned, dressed in such formal, staid clothing and had very stern facial expressions! I think the people of the time were tougher than we are today. And yet they knew how to enjoy themselves too – many Knysna locals would use the accommodation at the Heads as holiday accommodation.

In fact the land on which Hope Villa was built was owned by Thomas George Anderson Horn, a hotelkeeper. He was born at the Royal Hotel in Main Street, Knysna in 1859 and became the owner/manager of the hotel after having taken over the management of the hotel from his father Captain Thomas Horn, in 1879. Once the hotel had grown into a successful business, Thomas Horn decided to create an offer of alternative accommodation for his guests, but at the East Head. He purchased two lots of land in 1901 on which Hope Villa was built. In 1903 he bought the 3rd lot of land. These pieces of land were originally part of the Woodbourne Farm which was owned by Thomas Duthie II.

Maria Horn, wife of Thomas George Anderson Horn, built Hope Villa in 1901. It is reported that Maria personally supervised the construction, sitting on a chair, under a black umbrella! Hope Villa was then used as an annex to the Royal Hotel for guests who preferred to stay at the Heads.

I love this excerpt taken from The Herald newspaper, 28 September 1910. It fits in so well with the feelings I have when I look at the old photos and try and imagine what life would have been like in those times!

“On Wednesday afternoon Mr and Mrs T. G. Horn were “at home” to their many friends at their seaside residence, Hope Villa, at the Heads. The day opened with a glorious sunshine and blue sky with a slight south-west wind blowing and several of those who intended proceeding down to the Heads by boat were looking forward to an outing on the river. However, at about 2 o’clock the wind freshened into a regular gale, but in spite of this boats ventured out for the Heads. The majority of the people seemed to think it would be wiser to proceed by cart and motor. Soon after three o’clock the weather looked very black and threatening and at about half past three rain began to fall. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, some sixty-odd people arrived at the Heads where they were provided with dainty refreshments and tea. Although several heavy showers fell in town, at the Heads only a slight shower interrupted the gathering.”

Isn’t that just lovely? Now when you walk past Hope Villa on your way to the Heads, or if you choose Hope Villa as your holiday accommodation, you can travel back in time and try to imagine just what it would have been like here in Hope Villa’s early days!

In 1922 she started the original general dealer store and butcher in Rheenendal and this shop served the Millwood woodcutters and staff from her husbands sawmill. Totties Farm Kitchen has stayed in the family and is now run by her great-grandson and his wife.

Totties is situated 15 kilometres along the Rheenendal road, close to the Millwood area where there have been recent sightings of the Knysna elephants as well as sightings of fresh dung and tree damage.

Tottie’s Farm Store is filled with home-made goodies and basic supplies, crafts and local produce. You will be taken back to your childhood years when you see the sweets displayed in big glass jars and drawers at the till counter. Buy just one or a whole handful! Just the way it was when we were young!

The Farm Kitchen restaurant is a wonderland of historic memorabilia, furniture and crockery! It took at least half an hour to wander around and look at the interesting bits and pieces that are clearly part of the family history. Lots of old photographs are on display as well as books and appliances dating back to the early days. We chose to sit outside in the garden under the trees on a mish mash of old (ball and claw) and newer furniture. The big pond adds a tranquil atmosphere to the setting. The food is deliciously fresh and seriously tasty! Well worth a visit as part of the Rheenendal Ramble experience Read more

<rights>Copyright (c) 2015, Hope Villa Bed & Breakfast</rights>

Robberg - "Cape Point" of the Garden Route

Robberg’s rock formations date back to between 110 and 130 million years when South Africa was part of a super continent. About 120 million years ago the continent split and Robberg’s rocks were deposited in the bed of this new South African sea. There is evidence of people first living here 120 000 years ago. As sea levels dropped, grasslands formed and this provided grazing for the Giant Cape Horse, buffalo and hartebeest which became extinct 10 000 years ago. There is a huge amount of evidence of the Stone Age and the excavation done at Nelson Bay Cave shows this very well.

The vegetation is mainly fynbos but at times one walks through foresty and sand dune sections. The wildlife on Robberg is incredible and if you are lucky you will spot the Western Cape’s smallest antelope – the rare blue duiker. The adult males reach a height of only 30cm at their shoulder! You cannot miss the seal colony on the rocks below the trail – they are noisy and smelly with the males weighing up to 350kg! You might also see whales and dolphins along the shoreline. We saw hundreds of dolphins swimming in formation along the coast!

The entrance permit to the reserve costs a mere R40 per person. We chose to do the 5,5 kilometre Witsand walk which took us just under 2 hours. We managed to work up quite a sweat despite it being a cool day, so I recommend taking a swimming costume with you so that you can dip into the water when things become too hot! The Point Circuit is just over 9 kilometres and is more strenuous and is not suitable for children. Pack a picnic lunch, cozzie and plenty of water and make a day of it!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2015, Hope Villa Bed & Breakfast</rights>

Hope Villa's Favourite Knysna Eateries!

Two of these favourites are favourites because they are a mere 100 metres stroll in the direction of the Heads from Hope Villa, with the most unbeatable views!

SENZA is the perfect sundowner spot! They have an extensive cocktail menu and are situated right on the rocks at The Heads. Their menu is varied and changes seasonally. The chef, Michael, is passionate about food and pleasing his clientelle. He prepares his seasonal Chef’s Specialities, together with a large selection of pizzas, pastas, seafood and more! The service can sometimes be a bit slow, but when one is sitting in such an awesome location, sipping on a cocktail, gazing out at the sea, does it matter?! They are open daily from 12h00 till late.

The second “must-do” restaurant at The Heads is EAST HEAD CAFE - “... more than just a café or coffee shop, it is a local landmark where family and friends have a good time with good food and casual wine, enjoying life.” They are open daily from 08h00 until 15h30. Listed as the # 1 Restaurant in Knysna on TripAdvisor, this spot is well worth a visit. Their menu is extensive, produce is fresh and local and cooked with passion – breakfasts, lunches, toasted sandwiches, salads and cakes and bakes – and the best cappucinos! Service is friendly and efficient and your kids will be happy to entertain themselves in the play area on the verandah while you relax and take in the awesome view to The Heads!

Moving further away from The Heads, we love to pop in to ILE DE PAIN, on Thesen Island. Ile de Pain, which means Island of Bread, is open every day except Mondays. I love the decor and the cappucinos! Actually everything is to love – friendly and efficient waitrons, fab light meals or cakes... Apart from the tantalising menu, they also offer a wide selection of artisnal breads, baked in wood-fired ovens on the premises. My favourites are the baguettes and the wheat and rye sourdough Companio. Treat yourself to an almond croissant (or two!).

While at the coast - eat seafood! FRESHLINE FISHERIES has become a local and visitor favourite since it opened. Apart from being a fresh seafood wholesaler they now also offer a fantastic, rustic restaurant. All their fish is caught with handlines as they believe in environmentally friendly and sustainable fishing. Restaurant paitrons can select fresh Kingklip, Gurnard, Snoek, Hake and more, as well as prawns, crayfish, calamari, mussels, to name but a few! The restaurant is outdoors, the floor is beach sand, on colder evenings big pit fires are lit between tables to keep the chill at bay and meals are served in enamelware. No fancy frills but you dont need that when the food is so honest and tasty! The chips are probably the best in Knysna and the prices are unbelievably good! Remember that this restaurant is not licensed though so feel free to take your cooler box with you with your tipple of choice.

All the abovementioned restaurants you will find on our Google map (under the Location tab on our website).

Through this area once ran a stream, which due to development in later years, silted up and stopped flowing. Because the area was in a valley it was not really developed further but it became a dump, and invader vegetation took over. In 1991 the area was proclaimed a local nature reserve of around 10 hectares. Thereafter local residents of Knysna managed to clear much of the alien invader bush from the area and today it is filled with fynbos and riverine vegetation. I was amazed by the number of different proteas that are growing on the slopes of the reserve. Unfortunately most of them have flowered already but I can imagine how awesome the area must look when they are all in flower!

Pledge Nature Reserve lies just behind the town centre, a short drive up from the Main Road, and about 8 kilometres from Hope Villa. There are many short trails meandering through the reserve. The pathways are well kept and signposted according to the various different routes. Unfortunately there were no maps at the entrance to the reserve indicating the different trails but a map can be found on the reserve website. Many well positioned benches are placed throughout the reserve and there is a very peaceful pond along one of the pathways that takes you lower in the valley where I would imagine one could sit for hours watching the birds at play. The stream is now running again although when we were there this morning I was surprised that it looked a bit milky rather than the usual “brak” water that streams in this area normally are. One of the pathways leads to a view point at the top of the reserve. The path we were on took us through the forest and as we got higher the vegetation changed to fynbos and suddenly we were out in the sunshine, faced with a fantastic view over the town, Thesen Island and straight through to the Heads.

We did this walk early in the day when the forest was still waking up so there were many birds to be heard. Apparently now more than 80 species of birds can be found in the area.

So next time you are in Knysna and feel like escaping to a bit of unspoilt nature not too far away - we have a lovely nature reserve right on our doorstep.

<rights>Copyright (c) 2014, Hope Villa Bed & Breakfast</rights>

Your Complete Guide to the 2014 Knysna Oyster Festival

	1) Blue Duiker Trail- (2,75kmTime 1 to 1, 5 hrs) –The Blue Duiker is the smallest of the forest antelope and is rarely seen but its tiny footprints may be seen at stream crossings or on the footpaths. It was hunted by the woodcutters and was considered a real delicacy by them Ideal for younger families. This stroll follows a forest path past ancient saw pits, and fallen Yellow Wood trees, through a fern filled glen up to the Geelstoot Pad. Here the forest opens for a while which is great for bird watching before the trail heads onto Nicos Bos Vark Pad for the last leg home.
2) Bushbuck Trail (6.5km Time 2-3 hours). The Bushbuck is more common and can sometimes be seen if one walks quietly through the forest. It hides up in the dense forest during the day and ventures into the open areas at night. A great walk for slightly older families. The route goes past the saw pits and through a couple of streams with wooden bridges to keep your feet dry. The path joins the Akker Pad before joining the Geelstoot Pad. After that the last leg is on Nicos Bos Vark pad.
3) Bush Pig Trail (10km Time 3 to 4 hours) – Bushpigs are herd animals and can be found in groups of up to 20 animals. The evidence of them rooting around for bulbs and edible roots is all over the forest. These animals are dangerous if cornered but are generally heard crashing through the forest undergrowth as the run away. This longer Route follows paths and also the Water Pad. The highlight being a small waterfall and swimming hole at the mid way point. After half way a steady climb brings the hikers out onto the GeelStoot Pad for the amble home via Nicos Bos Vark Pad.
The composition of the forest varies, depending on height above sea level, rainfall, soil type, slope and other factors. It is thus classified into eight different forest types, from very dry to very wet. The classification is done according to the combined assessment of moisture regime, ground, shrub and tree flora as well as factors such as tree form and canopy height. Some trees are labelled. Species encountered include ironwood, yellowwood, white pear, stinkwood, Cherrywood, Cape beech and fine examples of Cape ash. Onderbos (black witch-hazel) abounds in the understory and in the wetter parts you will encounter tree fens. Various climbers (e.g. wild grape), epiphytes (such as old man’s beard and tree orchids), ferns (maidenhair fern), lichens and colourful fungi are also found. The indigenous fauna forms an integral part of the forest. The animals are not often seen but their tracks and droppings are often seen on the walk. Larger mammals include Bush pig, Bushbuck, Blue Duiker, Baboon and Vervet monkeys as well as Leopard and Caracal. Bush pigs are omnivorous and are found in sounders of 6-20 individuals while Bushbuck are either solitary or in pairs. They are nocturnal but are occasionally seen when disturbed during the day. 35-40 species of forest birds are found here, while more are found in areas adjacent to the forest. Species include Knysna Lourie, Narina Trogon, Olive Thrush, Chorister, Cape and Starred Robins. Sound takes priority over sight in the forest, and the birds thus have loud, penetrating calls. Snakes such as the very poisonous boomslang occur but are seldom seen. Its favourite diet is the Knysna dwarf chameleon.

We just went to browse the market but inevitably ended up buying things that we had no intention of buying – just because everything looks so special! We found a stall selling German produce – wursts, leberkase, cold meats and Friedel’s all-time favourite “spek”. His lunch is sorted! There are also stalls selling fresh-cut flowers, plants and herbs. The other section of the extensive market is more crafty. Beads, clothing, decor items, leather goods.

So put Wild Oats Market on your list of things to do when next in Knysna! Just remember to go there with an empty stomach, an empty basket, a full wallet and plenty of time! And be there early to avoid disappointment!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2014, Hope Villa Bed & Breakfast</rights>

Circles in a Forest Trail

The drive took us along the Rheenendal road, past Totties Restaurant to the SanParks entrance kiosk at the Millwood Forest/Goudveld area. Entrance/permit fee is R17.00 per person which is well worth it. Here the road becomes gravel but it is well maintained and even in a “city car” it is a comfortable drive. In fact the road had been graded yesterday so we were lucky. I guess in the rainy season it is advisable to drive in a 4x4 as it can get slippery up there!

We parked the car at Krisjan-se-Nek Picnic Site. Here is a memorial stone for Dalene Matthee, the South African author who wrote many beautiful stories about the Knysna forest and the interesting woodcutter people who in times gone by inhabited the forest. It was in this area of the forest that she came to gain inspiration and restore her soul when she was busy writing. This is also where the Circles in a Forest Trail starts. There are two options: a 3.1 kilometre and an 8 kilometre trail. We chose the shorter one. The well kept path meanders through the lush forest. Today was quite windy but fairly sheltered in the forest. From time to time one hears the creaking and singing of the tree trunks as they rub together high up in the forest canopy. We saw and heard lots of birds – witoogies, mouse birds, the Knysna Loerie of course, and others that we weren’t able to identify. We didn’t see any animals although we did see diggings and spoor of some sort of bush buck. We crossed a couple of dry streams and one that was trickling with water. I guess in winter there will be the added sound of running streams which adds to the atmosphere of the forest! Next time we will do the 8 kilometre trail!

Five minutes after we arrived home early this afternoon it started raining. Just what Knysna needs to keep all the forest and mountain rivers flowing – and hopefully it will wash the dust off our car!

<rights>Copyright (c) 2014, Hope Villa Bed & Breakfast</rights>

Marvellous Muffins!

I enjoy cooking. I have a big file of all my tried and trusted recipes that I have collected over the years. Baking is another story. It is too precise! But I have a handful of flop-proof recipes that I turn to when the need arises, and they never let me down.

Sometimes I like to serve warm Cheddar, Feta and Spring Onion Muffins at breakfast. This recipe is truly a flop-proof recipe. They look shop-bought - which always puts a smile on my face because in actual fact they are dead simple and ever so quick to make. And the added bonus is that precision in this recipe is not something one needs to worry about – in fact you can change the ingredients to whatever you like and they still impress! Sometimes I add sundried tomatoes and feta, other times I omit the spring onion and add smoked salmon. Spinach with the feta is also a tasty alternative.

Here is how it is done...

Mix together all the dry ingredients, add the cheese and spring onions. Then beat the milk, oil and eggs and stir into the dry ingredients. And that is it! Spoon into a muffin tin and bake until golden brown on top.

Remember to always cook with love – this truly makes a difference to the taste!

The backdrop to Hope Villa is a forest of Milkwood tress. A haven for many bird species. And they keep me busy – observing, feeding, watering! The Rock Pigeons love seed and bread. The Witoogies, Bulbulls and Mouse Birds love fruit. The Weaver birds eat everything. And all birds love grated cheese! Propped on the gnarled root of a Milkwood tree we placed a bottle of coloured (this attracts the birds) sugar water which I have to fill at least once a day. The Weaver birds fight over it! The soundtrack in the Hope Villa garden is one of birdsong.

Let me tell you about Mr and Mrs P. These are two Rock Pigeons who love me. Probably because when they were trying to build a nest under the verandah ‘afdak’ I helped them. I built them a ledge onto which they built their nest. But after two sets of babies Friedel decided that it was not ideal to have them nesting there so he removed the nest. This really upset Mr & Mrs P. I took the nest and moved it on to the top of a garden store cupboard that we have in the back garden. Mrs P found the nest and accepted it in its new position and a few days later she was sitting on two more eggs! But sadly one night something (Cape Gray Mongoose perhaps?) ate her eggs and she was afraid to go back to the nest. We once again had a very upset Mr and Mrs P so I moved the nest back to its original place under the ‘afdak’ on the front verandah. Mrs P is now sitting on eggs again!

Our next regular visitors to the garden are three Hadadas. Mom, Dad and teenager. They spend hours in the garden, digging their long beaks deep into the ground in search of something crunchy. I have just planted spinach seeds into a section of my veggie garden and I am not sure how many plants will grow because the hadadas love this patch of newly turned earth. A while ago they discovered our pond in the back garden. It is not a big pond but that doesn't stop the hadadas from bathing in it. Two at a time. A tight fit. A sight to see! But they flap and grunt and upset the water plants, then get out and preen, and a minute later the temptation becomes too great and they do it all over again. When they have finished their bathing they move to the aloe garden in the sun and spread their wings to dry. Soon they will be lying next to the swimming pool on the sun loungers, asking me for beach towels! When one sees these large birds with the big beaks you would never think that they have such lovely characters!

At certain times of the year we are very fortunate to have three Knysna Loeries as regular visitors into our garden. We have some yellowwood trees in our back garden and when the berries on these trees are ripe the loeries come and feast on them. They are shy birds but if you sit very quietly in the garden you are able to see them hopping through the branches, cackling in glee as they eat berry after berry!

For the past couple of weeks we have watched a big eagle hunting here. I havent yet been able to identify her but she is big and beautiful. Yellow feet and yellow markings on her face, she swoops down into the trees in search of prey.

The call again of the Cape Robin and the day is done. A sign for the fruit bats to come out of hiding. The Milkwood trees come alive with hundreds of bats swooping through the branches, feeding on insects to give them energy for their nighttime escapades.

He hasn’t yet worked out how to juggle lectures (which seem to last all day), sport, sleeping, shopping and cooking. So I guess he isn’t cooking much yet. Even more reason why I need to be prepared – “food-wise”- for when he is with me this weekend.

So I am going to call on another of my flop-proof, quick-and-easy, kind-of-healthy recipes!

My Mom used to make these for us when we were kids. Sometimes she would drizzle them with tangy lemon frosting, other times they would be drizzled with chocolate. For this particular occassion there will be no drizzle – instead I have doubled the recipe because I know that by the time Dani leaves on Sunday he will have eaten half of the Crunchies already!

This is how we make them (remember not to let on to anyone how simple it is!)

Mix all the dry ingredients together. Add the melted butter, syrup and bicarb to the dry ingredients. Mix well then press the mixture into a baking tin and bake till golden brown. Leave to cool a bit before cutting them into squares.

An added “something” is that I have packed the Crunchies into an old ice-cream container. You know – Student Tupperware!

Mousey got her name because when I found her as a small kitten her white face reminded me of the little mouse in the movie “Stuart Little”. She has exceptionally short legs so cannot jump up onto things or climb trees (which is rather comforting for a neurotic cat-mom like me). We met late one night when I rescued her out of a tree. (Mmmm - might that also be one of the reasons she hasn’t ever tried to climb trees again?)

Ratty on the other hand is brave, jumps to any height and climbs trees. She moved in with us when she realised there was more to life than a household of barking dogs and raucous house-parties. And her name – well it just had to be.

Not to be forgotten is our “laatlammetjie” – Speedy. Speedy is a Wagtail and the cats are still trying to accept that they are not allowed to eat family members. Speedy chose us too – possibly because sometimes she prefers to eat the grated cheese we feed her than insects. And when she has babies she brings them to us too and they all eat grated cheese together!

Yes, we love our beautiful kids!
